Salons & spas: get back the 7.65% you pay in taxes on your staff’s tips

Your stylists’ tips are already being taxed. Federal law now lets salons recover the 7.65% FICA tax on those tips — 7+ chairs or $700K+ in revenue and you likely qualify. Most accountants never mention it because they are not aware of it.

No upfront cost. We are paid 8.75% of the credit we recover — nothing unless there is money back.

For the 2025 tax year and forward. Beauty businesses claim the current year and every year after — unlike restaurants, there is no retroactive lookback for prior years, so the number above is your per-year estimate going forward. Quick estimate only — it assumes your staff’s wages are above the federal minimum, which is typical in salons and spas.

Good to know

Common questions

Straight answers, no fine print.

Which beauty businesses qualify?

Hair salons, barbershops, nail salons, estheticians, and day spas — any beauty business where tipping the service provider is customary. If your clients tip your staff, the credit likely applies to you.

Do my stylists need to be W-2 employees?

Yes. The credit is calculated on tips your W-2 employees report through payroll. Booth renters and independent contractors don’t count — only your actual employees.

What does it cost?

Nothing upfront. It’s a pure success fee: 8.75% of the credit we recover for you. If there’s no credit, you pay nothing.

How much could my salon get?

It scales with reported tips — for example, 10 employees averaging $12,000 in reported tips each is $120,000 in tips, which works out to roughly $9,180 per year in credits. Your free check pins down your actual number.

How do I actually receive the money?

It’s a dollar-for-dollar credit against your income tax — not a loan, and nothing to pay back. Unused credit can generally be carried forward to future tax years.

Can I claim it for prior years like restaurants do?

No — and we’d rather tell you straight. The beauty expansion applies to tax years beginning after December 31, 2024, so 2025 is the first claimable year, plus every year going forward. There is no retroactive lookback for beauty businesses.

My accountant never mentioned this.

Most accountants never mention it because they are not aware of it.
